Since then, lotteries have become the dominant source of state revenue. They have sparked enormous growth in state government, attracting a broad spectrum of Americans and bringing in billions in ticket sales each year. Lottery proceeds have helped fund everything from schools to parks, and many states now also operate their own private gaming operations.<\/p>\n
While there\u2019s no question that state lotteries are popular, the reasons behind their popularity aren\u2019t always clear. In a country where income inequality is rising, some people feel that the lottery is their last, best, or only chance at a better life. Lottery marketers try to convince consumers that playing is a fun experience, and the odds of winning are low enough to make it a reasonable gamble.
