Maryland’s Lottery and Gambling Laws

Throughout the twentieth century, state-operated lotteries have become increasingly popular in the United States and Europe. While it is difficult to quantify the impact of lottery gambling on American society, it is estimated that over a billion dollars in legally wagered dollars are spent each year.

While there are no hard statistics on the number of lottery players, the number of lottery tickets sold has increased exponentially over the past few years. To avoid any potential abuses, lottery retailers have to implement safeguards to prevent minors from buying tickets. In the United States, the legal age limit for lottery tickets is 18 years of age. However, many lottery games require that minors be at least 16 years old to play. Moreover, a lottery ticket does not necessarily have to be purchased in person. In most cases, an adult can purchase a lottery ticket for a child.

The state of Nevada paved the way for other states to follow its lead. The state’s legalization of gambling on a large scale was the subject of a recent documentary entitled The Great Gamble. However, despite its successes, the state’s gambling laws remain ambiguous. Specifically, it remains unclear whether the state has banned betting on other sporting events such as baseball, football, and basketball. Alternatively, Nevada’s lottery laws have not specifically mentioned a minimum age for raffle tickets. The state’s lottery has a small but growing list of games that require a minimum age of 18 to play.

The lottery scheme in Maryland is a bit more complicated. Its minimum age for parimutuel wagering is 18 and for bingo, the minimum age is 21. Despite these stipulations, Maryland’s lottery has a unique quirk. Although it is not legal to recruit children under the age of 18 for promotional purposes, the state’s lottery does have the distinction of being the only state in the country to make it legal to give lottery tickets to children.

Maryland’s lottery has a lot of other perks, too. For instance, the state has signed compacts with two Indian tribes, and it also has two Indian casinos. However, it is not the first state to offer a land-based casino, nor is it the first state to offer casino games on the Internet.

Besides the lottery, Maryland’s gambling laws also include a handful of other laws that are worth noting. In particular, it is unlawful to purchase Lottery shares for a child under 18 years of age. It is also illegal to sell a ticket for the Lottery to a child under 18 years of age. The law has a fine of up to $200 for this offense. Similarly, it is also illegal to solicit children under the age of 18 for charitable purposes. The state’s lottery also has a plethora of other minor laws, from the legality of gambling in public places to the requirement that a driver’s license be presented before a ticket can be purchased. In fact, Maryland has the most complicated gambling laws of any state in the country.
